As everyone knows, the King of Pop passed away last week. I know there's been a lot of speculation about the cause his death, but the one thing I've enjoyed is seeing people put out their tributes to Michael, the mass Moonwalks, etc. I personally felt he got more bizarre as the years went on, but you can't deny he made some great music.
Remember how exciting it was to watch the "Thriller" video? Or where you were the first time you saw it on MTV? I remember the first time we saw that, we were at my Uncle Bill's house, and my brother Tyson freaked out and went and hid in the other room (he was 3 or 4 at the time). I also remember I had the cassette tape of "Thriller", where my friend Joe only had the record. Ah, I felt so cool and technologically advanced to have the tape! :)
I recall the summer I went with my friend Bethany to visit her relatives, and we were both terribly envious that her cousins had gotten to see the Jackson's Victory tour in Kansas City. No fair!!!
And back to "Thriller", in case you can't tell that's a favorite of mine. I loved the scene in the movie "13 Going On 30" where they staged the big dance routine to copy the "Thriller" video. Fabulous! I think that kind of rekindled my appreciation of Michael's older tunes. I'm currently really big on "Never Can Say Goodbye".
How about you? What's your favorite Michael Jackson or Jackson 5 tune???
i've been thinking about this, and ya know? i'm still not sure. just when i have it cornered, another song pops to mind. so rather than leave you hanging, i'll just share at this very moment it's smooth criminal.
ReplyDeleteit is fun to think back over. the michael jackson we and our folks grew up with before he deconstructed himself.
Smooth Criminal! Good one!
ReplyDeleteAlso, reading this reminded me of another Jackson moment. Remember when our Brownie troops had the big food drive and We Are The World singalong moment? Classic 80s right there. :)
Well, since we only listened to Oldies - I'm pretty sure I've never seen the Thriller video, though I must have heard some of his songs at some point or other. The only Jackson 5 song our Oldies station played was ABC (I think). Wow, I'm just so out of it on this one!!!
ReplyDeleteThey probably played the Jackson 5 version of Rockin' Robin as well. Actually, Katie was quite upset when she saw that the boy that sang Rockin' Robin died. She didn't realize how many years ago it was that Michael sang that song since we still hear it on the radio today. We had to explain he was a grown-up now and in poor health, and it started to make a little more sense to her after that.
