Earlier this month, I'd mentioned (HERE) that I signed up for a challenge at the Y to "run" the distance from our Y to the starting line of the Boston Marathon. With each real mile counting for 25 challenge miles, it's just over 50 miles of actual running to get there.
I've been slowly but surely cranking along, with a list of miles and dates to fill in on the Big Board outside the fitness room each time I get to the Y. After I filled in my information today, I realized something...
I only have 7 miles left!!!
When did that happen!?! I thought I still had 12-15!
Looks like I will be able to complete the challenge with no problem. :) And that makes me smile. No prizes, t-shirts, or anything, just a good feeling about getting it accomplished.
Hope you're having a great day!!!

New Outfits!
My mom sent the girls an early Easter package recently... matching dresses and sweaters! Although the sweaters didn't make it in the picture, here they are wearing the dresses for church:
And as for me... For work, I had to tape a spot on a community affairs segment on our local noon news. Yikes! We were discussing a project that I am well-versed in, but I was afraid of having to speak about it on camera. Also something I was afraid of... my wardrobe! I was told to dress up and not wear black on top. No black on top!?!? That's what all my fancy stuff is! Colin told me to make an emergency trip to the mall. Thanks to my new friends at Ann Taylor Loft, I came back with this:
I looked great, felt great, and feel like I pulled off the interview in a reasonably intelligent fashion. It airs today... I've set the DVR! Can't wait to see it!

My Grandma
My Grandma Eileen (Dad's mom) passed away this week at the age of 94. Although you may think that's old, she sure didn't act like it! She loved to read, do word puzzles, complain about noisy neighbors, walk, and get down on the floor to do crunches. Yes, crunches! At 94! She was always in good health, all the way to the end. For someone her age, she did have all "original equipment"... no pacemaker, replaced joints, etc. Up until she passed, she was still doing her exercises. While she'd had a few troubles lately, we were certainly not expecting this.
Funeral services will be this coming week. I know we will miss her, but it is such a blessing to know that she is with Grandpa in Heaven now, and to know that she did not suffer at all in her last days with us on Earth.
We love you, Grandma!!!

Random Updates
1. I DID win my age group on Saturday! They had me listed with an official time of 26:47, still a post-kids PR for me. Woohoo! I was 1/5 in the 30-34F division, 11/54 women overall, and 33/112 for overall entrants. The race director called me this morning to make arrangements for me to pick up my medal.
2. Now that I'm in a different office building at work, I can't really get to the Y anymore over lunch. We do have a small employee fitness center that is still accessible, though. I mean SMALL. Which is why I was willing to walk the extra distance to the Y. But since I prefer to run outside, it is going to work well as a place to change and shower. Yesterday I tested a new running route from the fitness center and it worked just fine. I just need to remember to put on the sunscreen! You wouldn't think you would get so red in the time it takes to run 3 miles, partially shaded route, but it happens.
3. Recently, Natalie has really begun to like coloring, and is starting to do it well. Katie has been more of an artist, and Natalie simply hasn't been interested. She's having a lot more fun coloring now, though, and doing even better at drawing her own pictures. It's a lot of fun to watch!
4. Katie has taken an interest in playing chess lately. Colin is trying to teach her all the rules. She's played Colin a few times and taken on Poppop once. She hasn't won yet, but is doing very well. I'm impressed!
I think that's all for now... I'm sure there is a lot of other random information in my head, so I'll be back if I think of more!

Tour de Village 5K Race Report
Saturday I ran in the Tour de Village 5K, a local event sponsored by the homeowners association of the subdivision where I did all that speed work. It was advertised as all-grass, so I had my fingers crossed that it would be a nice surface!
I ran into Victoria from our church at the starting line. She is coming off an injury and was going to walk/run the 5K, so we chatted for a while, then she went toward the back so she wouldn't get run over. They explained that it is 2 loops, starting at the park, weaving back into a conservation area behind the houses, return to the park, repeat. And then we were off!
I gotta tell you, I felt awesome. I don't know if it was the early morning or the nice surface or the good weather or what, but I felt super-speedy. My family was parked near the course and tailgated the race from the minivan. It was so awesome to hear them cheering me on as I looped past them! Natalie and her dancing made everyone laugh. :)
I don't have my watch handy as I type this, so I can't give you my splits right now. What I DO remember is my final time... 26:44! That is way faster than I thought I could do! I am waiting for the final results to get posted online, but I do think that I got first in my age group. Stay tuned and I will update this when I get the information!
Hope you are having a great weekend!!!

End of Winter Basketball
Last weekend marked the end of the winter basketball season at the Y. Always fun, but I'm glad we're done for now.
Eagles
Natalie's 3-4 team had a great year! With only 6 kids on our roster, everyone had to play pretty much all the time, but we did OK with that. Michael and Ethan were our 2 superstars. I was always amazed at how well they can shoot for being such little guys. Natalie, Lula, Zachary, and Noah made great improvement throughout the season. I was so proud of them all!
Dolphins
Katie's 5-6 team did very well, too. They start keeping score at this age group, and although I don't think we won any games, they were all very close, and the kids improved so much as the season progressed. I really enjoyed working with some old friends, Katie, Gavin, Madeline, and Jonathan, and I liked getting to know all our new teammates Kyle, Ryan, Zander, Dominick, Tyler, and Malaina as well. We had a talented group, and I hope they stick with it!
Next up... spring soccer!!!

Running in the Dark
Seriously. How DO you do it? I know so many people who run early in the morning or later in the evening, when there isn't enough sun to light their path. How?
Last night I had to stay late (as in past 8pm) for an event at work, so I got an OK from my manager to arrive a little later in the morning. I decided to take that time to do a 5 mile run as Colin took the girls in to school for me. Yeah, it was a little dark at 6:40am, but I figured the sun would be up soon, right? I had on a reflective vest, armband with flasher, reflective ankle band Road ID, and my phone. So I was cool, right?
Ha ha ha!
My saving grace was that I am so familiar with the route, so even though I couldn't always see, I could "see" it, if that makes any sense. I always use the sidewalk on the south side of the road. When I first leave from my house, all the streetlights are on the north side of the road, casting very little light over to where I was. I was OK, though, except after about half a mile, a whole block of the streetlights all went off at once! I guess whoever programs the timers forgot about daylight savings time!
So. There I was, and it was VERY dark. I took it a little slower and prayed for car headlights to illuminate my path until I got to where the streetlights switch over to the south side of the road, and those were actually still on. Hooray!
That was about the 1 mile mark. I continued on to my turnaround point, and boy was it quiet! Dark and quiet... I tried not to get spooked by it when I heard a squirrel or a bird in the trees. I saw a couple people out with their dogs, but otherwise, soooo quiet. After a while, I was almost getting a rush from it, like when you are doing something dangerous that you know you're not supposed to do. Coming back toward my house, the sun started to rise, the landscapers were out on the golf course, and people were starting to drive to school and work. Our neighborhood was finally waking up. I was glad I did it, but I don't know if I'll make it a habit. Running by yourself when it's so dark out is a little freaky. I was being as safe as possible with the reflective gear, staying on the sidewalk, and having Colin know my route. Still. I don't know if it's for me.
So there you have my story about running in the dark. I think I'll stick to daylight from now on!
Other running updates:
1. On my "Run to Boston" challenge, I've completed 22 of 55 miles required. Timewise, we're not quite halfway through, so I think I'll be OK.
2. I signed up for a local 5K this weekend. It is advertised as being an all-grass route. Should be nicer on the joints, but I'm a little leery of it... I've been to the park that is our start/finish before, and the sod there is so spongy that I'm afraid I'll sink knee-deep in it! I'll let you know how it goes.

Ready for A New Challenge?
I say that both in terms of running and my work situation. I'll cover both...
Running
Well, after the 15K, I didn't really have anything on my plate. I just wanted to taper back down to normal jogs, maybe not every day, and probably not as long. Until I got an email from the Y saying they were hosting a challenge in honor of the Boston Marathon. It's very informal, and free, but the goal is to run the distance from our YMCA to the starting line of the Boston Marathon in Hopkinton, MA between March 1 and April 18. NOW, one check with our friends at Google Maps will tell you that it is more than 1,300 miles from here to Hopkinton! Therefore, for this challenge, 1 actual mile run = 25 challenge miles. So it will take 50-some actual miles run to "make it to Boston". I signed up and have been working on that. I'm just over 25% there at this point, but there are some circumstances with work that may stand in my way.
Work
I don't talk too much about work on here, but we've been going through a big merger since about June 2010. Slowly but surely, things are changing, and one thing that's changing is going to be our office location. We found out earlier this week that they'd like us out of our current spot by May, with our group being split up into 2 different locations. Well, then on Wednesday, they told those of us that are going to the one location that they're ready to have us in our new spot on MONDAY. Less than a week's notice!!!
We have been packing like maniacs and I have about half my things over there now. It has been nuts, to say the least. My new building is about 3 blocks from where I am now, but it's that much farther from the downtown Y and all the good lunch spots, so boo to that. :( It is a nice facility, though, and I'm sitting right in a line with people from my current group, so I think we'll be OK. It'll be a change! We'll see how it goes. :)

Happy Birthday!
My "baby", my brother Travis, turned 30 today! It was a pleasure to call him (though he was still at work), wish him a happy birthday, and chat for a few minutes about him and the family. Snowing a lot where he is, so hopefully the weather improves for him the rest of the week. Otherwise, he'll be doing more of this, like we did at Christmas:
He said he doesn't really feel any older, and I told him to keep up that positive attitude. I know that I'm only getting more AWESOME as time goes by, and so is he. :)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Weekend Happenings
First things first, my sister-in-law Angie made it back yesterday, safe at home from her 2nd tour in Iraq. I am so thrilled that she's back in the good old USA! I know my brother is so thankful that she's back. He really missed her, and I'm glad they're back together again.
For the rest of the weekend...
It was our second-to-last basketball game weekend! While I love helping the kids and watching my own girls improve their skills, this season has been wearing on me. I don't know if it was the unorganized fashion in which it began, or the fact that Cherie and I are coaching 2 teams, or some of the parents I've had to work with or what... Cherie and I are both glad that after next Saturday, it'll be behind us. And then we have some time off until soccer.
Which, by the way, Katie wants to play soccer again this season. She hasn't played in 2 years, claiming she just didn't like it anymore. Someone at school must be talking to her about it, because when I asked Natalie about playing again, Katie piped up that she wanted to try it again as well. We'll see how that goes!
I ran 5 miles today. I did run once during the week, after saying I would take an entire week off after the 15K. (So that rest thing didn't really work for me.) I ran on Wednesday, then again today. I was thinking about 4 or 5 and decided to go 5. It was kind of slow, but the weather was great and the wind was blasting me home that last mile or so. :) Very windy out today, but cool. Why couldn't it have been like this last weekend???
We've had a weekend of good food. We grilled out last night, then I cooked up a big dinner tonight. We also were given a HUGE batch of fresh spring rolls from Madeline's mom after the basketball game... if you like spring rolls, I think I have a couple left! So unexpected, but Joy is a very sweet woman. Cherie and I really appreciated her thoughtfulness.
I think that's about it... Time to call it an evening! Hope you're getting ready for a great week!!!

ABCs of ME!
I saw this on Running Diva Mom and thought I would try the ABCs of me:
A - I have always dreamed of going on a cruise in Alaska.
B – I love to watch Baseball and often kept books for my brothers’ little league games when we were growing up. I still like to score the games when I watch them at the stadium!
C – I have played Clarinet since I was in 4th grade and still find it to be a good outlet for my energies.
D – My favorite drink is Dr. Pepper. What would I do without it?
E – Exercise continues to be an important part of my daily life, and I try to help my kids see that it can be fun!
F – I live in Florida, which I often complain is too hot for me!
G – One of the most amazing places I have ever visited is the Grand Canyon.
H – My favorite swoon-worthy singer is Harry Connick Jr.
I – The reason I think Florida is too hot is that I grew up in Iowa. I do miss the changing of the seasons you get in the Midwest.
J – One time, my friends and I drove from Chicago to Milwaukee for a baseball game, eating Jelly Bellies and cheese curds the entire way. Needless to say, our tummies didn't feel so swift once we got there!
K - My first car was a white 1988 Dodge Aries, a K-car. We did not have much time together before it met its untimely demise on the side of the road near the scenic overlook when I was in college. Poor thing had a massive engine failure. (Dad suggested I push it over the scenic overlook. I had it towed for free using my friend's AAA card, then sold for scrap, like any poor college student would do.) Note -- this was my hardest letter to do!!!
L - My favorite snacks are Luna bars. They have so many great flavors! Delicious.
M – I went to college in Missouri and loved how scenic it is in the southern portions of the state. The fall colors there are fabulous.
N – The other most amazing place I’ve visited is Niagara Falls.
O - The girls and I love to read the Olivia books and also watch her cartoon on TV. She is such a smart and sassy little pig. So cute.
P – We love to eat Pizza at our house, which I suppose is my fault. I could eat pizza almost every day if you let me.
Q - I do not like things to be too Quiet. It bothers Colin that I will leave the TV on while doing other things, but I have to have that background noise.
R – I am so glad I have continued Running for much of my life (even in college when I tried to tell a boyfriend that I’d “retired”). I have had so many great experiences and gotten so much satisfaction from running.
S – I have always had quite a Sweet Tooth and have a hard time keeping myself away from chocolate!
T – Colin and I have Two lovely daughters who are the sunshines of our life!
U - I have fond memories of my cousin Becci wearing her Wonder Woman Underoos as a swimsuit as we played in the sprinkler growing up! (Don't hurt me for saying that, B! This was a hard letter, too!)
V - With much of my family in Iowa/Minnesota/South Dakota, we were raised as huge Minnesota Vikings fans!
W - I love lifting Weights. You may not know that my brothers and I were all champion powerlifters in high school.
X - I hate dental X-rays. They make me gag!
Y – We are members of the YMCA and strong supporters of their youth sports programs.
Z – We love to go visit Zoos as a family. The girls love seeing all the different animals and enjoy learning about them by seeing them up close and personal.
So, did you learn anything new about me? Now it's your turn to share the ABCs of YOU!

Do You Like Green Eggs and Ham?
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DR. SEUSS!!!
We love Dr. Seuss. I'm sure you and your kids do, too. I am so thrilled that our preschool and elementary school have big parties to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday, complete with stories and costumes. What a great way to celebrate reading!
We have so many of his books and read them so often. It's hard to pick a favorite! The girls seem to favor There's a Wocket in My Pocket, and I like Fox in Socks. I like the increasingly difficult tongue-twisters, and try to go faster and faster as the book progresses. When tweetle beetles fight, it's called a tweetle beetle battle... :)
Read some Dr. Seuss today! I know you'll enjoy it. :)
